WALKER FIRE UPDATE May 11, 2003 Fire Information: 505-687-4265 Contact: Terri Wildermuth Cloudcroft, NM – The Walker Fire was 60 percent contained at 10:00 pm on Sunday, May 11. The size of the fire is estimated at 3,434 acres. The burn area is approximately 14 miles NE of Cloudcroft and exists on National Forest, Mescalero Indian Reservation and private lands. Roadblocks are still in place on Elk Canyon Road at US Hwy 82, and at Carr Canyon Road (Carr Gap Road) and US Hwy 82. No portion of US Hwy 82 is closed. All control lines were held throughout the day and mop-up will begin overnight. Confirmed losses include three residences and 16 outbuildings/vehicles. Structure protection is still in place. No fatalities or injuries have been reported. Committed resources include: Seven Type I Crews, five Type II Crews, 24 engines, eight dozers, and ten water tenders. 355 personnel are assigned to the incident as of May 11.
